MONDAY 14TH - 25TH SEPTEMBER
When is Freshers?
Freshers is from Monday 14th September until Friday 25th September.
What will Freshers look like this year?
Over the past few months, we have all found ourselves in what we now call our 'new normal'.
We want to reassure you that no matter what situation comes our way, we are here for you all – the students at Leeds Arts University. We have been working really hard to bring you a safe, welcoming and above all exciting start to your first year at University but of course, this will look and feel slightly different.
Your safety is our number one priority therefore our Freshers and welcome events will be predominantly hosted online. If it is safe to do so, we will also look to host socially distanced events as you all get settled into University life.
Please be aware that planned events, timetables and membership information are subject to change. As the Government guidance is amended, we may see some changes in our plans, but rest assured we will keep you completely up to date! We’re with you every step of the way.
Is there a Freshers Facebook group I should join?
We’re pleased you asked! Yes! You can go ahead join Leeds Arts University Freshers 2020 [OFFICIAL]. Here you’ll find the latest info, events, competitions and general Freshers fun!
Are Freshers events free?
Apart from our Raise and Give fundraising events, all our events are totally free and open to all new students! Making it even easier to get to know your fellow LAU’ers.
Where do I get event tickets?
You can grab your ticket by hitting the ‘Join In’ button below each event. This will take you to a quick registration form to book your place at the event. Please note that some events have limited capacity and require you to reserve a place. Once you’ve bagged your spot at an event, make sure to keep an eye on your emails for further information on how to join the event.
If the event has no ‘Join In’ button or registration form, this means that the event will be live on social media rather than in a Google Meet. All you have to do is stay tuned to @leedsartsunion
What if the event is sold out?
Some of the events, such as workshops, have a limited number of spaces available. This is because these events are pre-booked with an external organiser or have a limited amount of materials available.
If the event is sold out and you’re super keen to get a spot, email us on email@example.com to be put on the waiting list. If spaces become available, you’ll be first to know. Otherwise, keep an eye on social media where we will announce any spaces available!
What about events in Leeds?
There are a number of student event companies that you will come across during your time at Uni. It’s important to stay smart and be wary of independent event organisers promoting unofficial Freshers events. These are not affiliated to Leeds Arts University or Leeds Arts Union.
Be advised that there is no certainty whether government regulations will allow for these events to go ahead by September. If you do purchase from an unofficial organiser, please make sure you can get a refund if the event[s] cannot go ahead! We don’t want you out of pocket!
How do I join a society or want to get involved with sports & fitness?
Simple! Just head to either the ‘Societies’ or ‘Sport & Fitness’ pages where you can see the full list of active societies, sports teams & fitness programmes. Join a society, sports team or our MOVE fitness classes by completing the quick online sign-up form and hey presto! The society leader or one of the Union team will be in touch with all the information you need for joining in.
What if there isn’t a society I want to join?
Had a look through the societies list and don’t see anything for you? Then why not start your own society? All our societies are started by students, for students. With all the help and support from the Union team you could ever wish for, we can bring your society idea to life in no time!
Find out more about how to start a society here!
How will sports teams and fitness classes be run?
This is where we may see the biggest difference in ‘normal’ Union activities as we have to modify our practices because the number one priority is keeping you all safe.
Unfortunately, this may mean that we are unable to run the Netball and Football teams until guidance allows us to do so and we can put the measures into place. This also means that our MOVE fitness classes may be held online at the start of the year. The majority of these classes involve single person exercises like Pilates and Yoga so you can do them in the comfort of your own home.
At the start of the year, you will still be able to sign up online to all sports activities and be included in everything they do. You will be invited to socials run by the new Football and Netball Captains, whether they are online or in-person but socially distanced.
