HOW TO: START your own
So you've got an idea of what society you want to start, what now?
Check out the steps below to get your society up and running in no time!
It seems like an obvious one, but it's often forgotten - make sure you have enough people who want to join! We ask that you have around 10 people who would be interested in joining the society, as well as as extra person to help you lead the society as a co-leader! This helps make sure the workload of running a society is shared.
Fill out Society formation pack:
Send the Formation Pack back to us in the Union so we can read through it and check if there's anything you might have missed off.
If any problems arise, Union staff will contact you and alongside the Societies Officer, work together to work out any issues.
Once the Union staff and Societies Officer are happy, the Societies Officer will present it to the Executive Officer Team at the next meeting - these are held every three weeks.
The Executive Officer team will review the society proposal together, discuss any issues and then vote on whether to approve the formation of the society.
If you're society is approved, it becomes an official LAU Society and if it's denied, it is sent back to you for any recommended revisions. If it's denied, don't worry, the Union and the Societies Officer will work with you to iron out the kinks.
The Societies Officer, alongside Union Staff, will email you to let you know if your Society has been approved, and then advise you on the next steps.
A meeting will then be set up with the Union, the new Society and if possible the Societies Officer.
Then your Society is ready to go! Check out the 'How to Lead a Society' page for what to do next!
