About the Event
A one-off walking tour of the city centre for LGBT History Month.
Queer history is all around us. The building we walk past on the way to work might have witnessed the first meeting of a campaign group; the bus stop we use every day might be remembered fondly as the site of someone’s first kiss. But like many marginalised experiences, too often this history remains invisible.
From 2018-20, West Yorkshire Queer Stories, worked to bring the region’s LGBTIQA+ history to light. As part of the project, they produced an interactive queer history trail app. The app guides you around 13 points in Leeds city centre with hidden stories of our local queer past - each one brought to life by the voices of the West Yorkshire queer community.
On this walking tour, historian Kit Heyam - co-creator of the history trail - will use the app, taking you on a tour of its highlights. From Pride to squats, from 1840s court cases to 1990s raves, you'll see the city and its past in a new light. Running time approx. 2 hours.
