The first few weeks of uni are over and autumn is in the air. As the leaves turn a brilliant orangey-red and the wind gets that crisp chill, pumpkin spice season rolls in with its unique charm. Halloween - the highlight of October, offers loads of fun without breaking the bank. Whether you're carving out the perfect pumpkin or cooking up some autumn treats, there are countless ways to enjoy this magical time of year. Let's jump into some exciting autumn activities perfect for getting into the seasonal spirit, all while keeping your budget intact!

Picking the Perfect Pumpkin

A great way to immerse yourself into the autumn season and get a hit of fresh air and exercise too is by visiting a pumpkin patch. Fields lined with rows of bright orange pumpkins in all shapes and sizes is really a sight to behold. Several local farms around Leeds offer affordable pumpkin picking experiences making it an ideal, budget friendly outing for you and as many friends as you like!

Once you've picked your prize pumpkin there's often food, drinks, hayrides and face painting available to enhance your visit, sometimes there's even a corn maze, petting zoo and of course, numerous photo opportunities for that perfect pumpkin post on Insta!

Carving Your Masterpiece

Once you’ve brought your pumpkins home, the real fun begins: carving! Pumpkin carving is a cherished tradition that lets you express your artistic side. Consider hosting a carving party with friends, where everyone can share their ideas and creativity.

Before you start, ensure you have the right tools. A small serrated knife, a scoop, and some carving templates can simplify the task. If you’re budgeting, you can use kitchen utensils you already have but please be careful with sharp knives or tools!

As for design ideas, the options are unlimited. You might choose classic jack-o'-lantern faces or more intricate designs. Look online for inspiration or even draw your own unique patterns. Remember to save the insides you carve out to make some healthy and delicious recipes!

Autumn Cooking: Seasonal Flavours

As temperatures drop, it’s the perfect time to warm up with some autumn-inspired cooking. Embrace the season by incorporating ingredients such as pumpkin, apples, and warming spices into your meals. Cooking at home not only sparks creativity, but it can also save you money.

Consider making a delicious pumpkin soup or pie from the leftovers of your carving or apple crisp. Both are easy to make and can be made in large batches to share with friends or enjoy throughout the week.

For a simple pumpkin soup recipe, you’ll need a few basic ingredients: pumpkin, onion, garlic, vegetable broth, and your favourite spices. Blend everything together for a creamy, vegan-friendly meal that resonates with the comforting flavours of autumn.
