Sometimes there's nothing more relaxing after a long hard day, than sinking into a bath, letting the water and the bubbles cascade over you and wash all of the day's problems away. Unfortunately, a bath isn't a luxury we all have, but don't worry, because you don't need a bath to be transported to a land of peace, tranquillity and serenity when you have a shower! Look, I know what you're thinking, 'how can I relax in a shower when I can't even lay down in it?!?!?! IT'S NOT THE SAME AS A BATH!' I get it, I know it's not the same, but if you follow at least a few of these steps, you just might find baths become a fleeting memory in your consciousness.
STEP 1: MAKE YOURSELF A PLAYLIST
Whether you like to relax to the sound of a babbling brook, Garth Brooks, Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, SZA or Avenged Sevenfold; hook it up to your speakers and let those sweet sounds hit your ears to begin the relaxation process.
STEP 2: TURN THE LIGHTS DOWN LOW AND SET THE MOOD
Who doesn't appreciate the warm glow of a dimmed light? Or even better, light some of those candles that you have laying around and let their scent get caught up in the steam. Does this sound like a scene from a Nora Ephron film? Yes. Will this be the best kind of sensory overload ever? Definitely!
STEP 3: SET THE PERFECT TEMPERATURE
There's nothing worse (in this scenario) than when you turn the shower on, hop in, and it decides to have a moment where it goes from freezing cold to scalding hot. That's why I'd suggest you give it a moment. Let the shower have its tantrum and settle itself down to your perfect temperature.
STEP 4: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL YOUR PRODUCTS TO HAND!
This one's pretty self-explanatory. You don't want to get in the shower, and then just as you're about to scrub your body, remember that you've left that new loofah you bought in your shopping bag in the kitchen. Be prepared people!
STEP 5: GET FANCY WITH IT!
Remember when I said to light a candle and let the scent mix in with the steam? Well, if you want to heighten the experience, get yourself a bunch of lavender, tie some string around it, hang it over your shower head, and let the lavender work its therapeutic magic. Alternatively (now this is a secret, so keep it on the hush hush), take an orange or any sweet citrus fruit into the shower with you. Just as you're getting into your shower groove, crack open that bad boy and let the aromas fill the air. It also means you get a nice healthy snack mid-shower. WIN-WIN!
STEP 6: EXFOLIATE!
There's nothing else to say here. Exfoliate. Everywhere. It's really that simple.
STEP 7: AFTERCARE
So, you've just had the shower experience of your life, but that doesn't mean that the pampering has to end there. Have you ever wondered what keeps Pharrell and Naomi Campbell looking so young? You're not ready for this one...you're going to be shocked at how simple it is...ready...ok...the answer is...cold water (as well as some dermatologist recommended products and amazing genes)! That's right! Think about it, you've just spent time in the shower letting that steam open up your pores (you've hopefully cleansed your face also), and now it's time to close those pores back up so splash a little cold water on yourself. Trust me, it's one of the best tricks you can insert into your routine. Well, that and using the Superdrug Vitamin E range, but that's for another blog and another day.
Like I said at the beginning, as long as you implement a few of these steps into your shower routine, I guarantee that you'll find yourself on a first-class trip to inner peace (or something like that at least)!
