Start Your Own
So you've got an idea for a society you want to start but what do you do next? Check out the steps below to get your society up and running in no time!

1. See if anyone else likes your idea, who else is keen on what you're doing? Get some friends involved or total strangers, it’s a great way to meet new people! You need a minimum of 5 LAU students interested to get this approved by the Student Exec.

2. Find a co-leader or someone who would like to help you run the society, trust us, this really makes the whole thing easier and more enjoyable for you.

3. Fill out our Societies Formation Pack below, it’s simple and if you need any help with it just let us know, we’re here for you.

4. Once we have received your completed form, it will be reviewed at the next Student Executive Committee Meeting so sit back and relax while the Exec and President go through your formation pack and either approve your society or send a few more questions your way.

5. Wait for your society approval from the Union team before going ahead with any events. After your society has been approved, we will send you all the relevant training, risk assessments and society documentation to read and sign.

6. It begins! Once you've decided on your first event idea, just email the Union and we can send you our events planning template to get you started! Then you're ready to run your society, have fun and enjoy. You’ll be supported by the Union all along the way.

Bits to consider before completing your form:

-
Are any of our current societies similar to your idea?

-
Do you think your society needs to charge a membership fee? If so, you'll also need to fill out the Society Membership Budget Plan to explain why. This isn't a test, we just like to offer as many freebies as possible to our students, so we do our best to avoid charging where we can.

-
Consider your timing. As your society will need approving by the Exec, they need to be here to approve it so if you're submitting a form at the end of the academic year (May) or just before the festive holidays (December) bear in mind there could be a slight delay in it's approval, while the Exec meetings are paused.
