Starting your journey at LAU is like stepping into a vibrant tapestry of colours, creativity, and possibility. It can feel exhilarating but also a little scary. As a new student, you might be excited about your unique path and becoming more independent, yet also anxious about leaving home. Let’s explore the challenges of joining a creative arts university and how to embrace this thrilling experience.

Leaving Home: A Mixed (recycled canvas tote) Bag of Emotions

Packing your bags and moving to a new city on your own can be a whirlwind of emotions. You're excited to begin your new adventure and meet fellow students with similar interests but it's natural to feel a bit nervous about this next step in your life.

As you head to uni, remember that exciting times are to come. Taking time to adjust is normal many students are navigating similar feelings and you are bound to find your people. A good tip is to create a list of what excites you about university life—it can serve as a motivating reminder of the journey you’re beginning and the reason why you took this inspiring leap.

Making Friends: The Highs and Lows

Arriving at uni kicks off your search for new friends. Approaching new people can appear overwhelming at first, but remember—most students are just as nervous about making connections as you are and you have one BIG thing in common – you’re all creatives!

To break the ice, try small interactions within your class group. Introduce yourself and include a memorable detail that might interest others. Attend events centred around your likes to connect with other people who share your interests. Joining society meetings and communities is a great way to meet like-minded students and share your experience. Engaging in shared activities lays the foundation for potential friendships and creates a supportive network that could lead to future collaborations.

The Weight of Imposter Syndrome

Let’s address that nagging feeling in your stomach - otherwise known as imposter syndrome. You may ask yourself "what if my work isn't good enough?". Each individual is here  for a reason, including you. Your experience, work and perspective is unique and valuable.

In a creative university filled with talent, it's common to question your abilities. Instead of worrying, channel your energy into growth. Attend workshops that interest you; seek constructive feedback from tutors and peers, and gaining inspiration from the creative community around you. Making mistakes is part of the journey and can often lead to your best work!

Embracing Your Art: The Good and the Bad

Loving the work you make but fearing others won’t understand is a common struggle. For every project that resonates, there may be another that doesn't. This diversity is what makes a creative community vibrant.

Engaging in discussions about your work is key. Ask for feedback, and be open to sharing your thoughts on your peers' creations as well. By actively participating in these exchanges, you will begin to find your style and voice, which builds your confidence. Remember, being in a creative community is about self-expression, and there is no singular "right" way to create.

Balancing It All: Family and Friendships

Missing home is completely normal as you adjust to this new world. You might think about family and childhood friends and wish to share every experience with them but regular video calls or texts can help you maintain those strong connections.

At the same time, immerse yourself in university life. Explore your new city, go to gigs, attend art markets or join crit groups, attend film festivals, collaborate with other creatives and push yourself to try new things. Balancing your past relationships with your present experiences will enrich your overall journey.

Beginning your path at an arts university is transformative and filled with both challenges and rewards. It might feel daunting at first, but this journey will lead to personal growth and unforgettable memories. Embrace your fears and be patient with yourself. Every student you meet is also eager to connect and grow.

Allow yourself to be open, dive into your creative medium, and engage with your peers. The friendships you cultivate and skills you develop will shape you into not just a creative but the person you will be proud to become. Your adventure awaits. Go ahead, embrace it, and remember to have fun! After all, this is your time to shine!
